David Wetzel has been named the new head football coach at Plano Prestonwood Christian, the school announced Monday night.
Wetzel was previously at Baylor, where he most recently served as senior associate athletic director and executive director of the B Association. In that position, he oversaw Baylor’s letterwinners organization, fostering relationships with more than 5,000 former student-athletes and managing a 20-member board of directors.

“David Wetzel has been an invaluable member of our Baylor football family and his impact extends far beyond the field,” Baylor head coach Dave Aranda said in a statement. “Coach Wetzel meant so much to me during my time here, and I am incredibly grateful for his knowledge, mentorship and friendship over the last few years. His extensive experience as a high school head coach, his deep understanding of what it takes to build winning programs and his genuine care for young people make him an outstanding choice for this position.”
From 2017 to 2024, Wetzel was a key member of the Baylor staff, and the team won a Big 12 championship in 2021, appeared in the Big 12 championship game in 2019 and 2021 and won the Sugar Bowl in the 2021 season. His responsibilities included high school relations and recruiting.

Prior to Baylor, Wetzel compiled a 163–71 record over 20 seasons as a head coach at the Texas high school level, spending time at San Antonio Reagan, Killeen and Austin Hyde Park Baptist. He was elected president of the Texas High School Coaches Association in 2015.
“We are thrilled to welcome David Wetzel as the new head football coach of Prestonwood Christian Academy Plano,” PCA Superintendent Dr. Michael Goddard said in a statement. “Coach Wetzel is a man of deep and authentic faith in Jesus Christ, and that foundation drives every aspect of his leadership. He brings a proven winning mentality, but even more importantly, a heart for building young men of character, integrity and conviction.”
Wetzel replaces Donnie Yantis, who in January resigned as head coach after four seasons at the private school. Yantis said he was considering other coaching opportunities, as well as opportunities outside of coaching.
Prestonwood was 7-5 and the TAPPS Division I state runner-up this season. Yantis had a 32-15 record at Prestonwood and was a state runner-up in 2022 and a state semifinalist in 2023.
