AUSTIN, Texas — Lawmakers are now in a week-long recess for the holiday after they missed a Friday deadline to fund the Department of Homeland Security, resulting in a partial government shutdown. Democrats are demanding changes to immigration enforcement, such as new requirements for judicial warrants and mask restrictions for ICE agents. But Republicans are advocating to increase the budget for President Trump’s immigration crackdown. The lapse in funding will affect FEMA’s budget as well as TSA agents, resulting in delays at airports across the country.
This comes as student protests and walkouts continue today across Central Texas against immigration enforcement operations. One protest is scheduled to start at the Texas Capitol in downtown Austin. State leaders, including Governor Greg Abbott, have pushed back against the protests. The Texas Education Agency has issued guidance directing districts to mark participating students as absent and warned schools assisting students could face investigations.
