SAN ANTONIO – Mayor Jones is moving forward with a proposal that could make riding the bus free on some of the city’s busiest routes.
The mayor sent a letter to VIA CEO Jon Herrera requesting a plan detailing how VIA would implement a six-month pilot program offering free fare on the agency’s five most-used routes. According to the letter, those routes account for 25% of VIA’s ridership.
She asked that the plan be ready by March 11 and include how VIA would offset the revenue loss from eliminating fares on those routes.
Mayor Jones is hoping the pilot program will start on July 1.
