LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE FROM TTUHSC) – The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that approximately seven million people in the U.S. who are age 65 and older are currently living with Alzheimer’s dementia. That number is expected to top 13 million by 2050.
To spotlight and address the challenges posed by this disease, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Garrison Institute on Aging will host three events in November, National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
Saturday, Nov. 1
The Sixth Annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the TTUHSC Academic Event Center, 3601 Fourth Street.
John Bertelson, M.D., a neurologist at Texas Tech Physicians (TTP) and co-medical director of the TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging’s Memory Clinic, and Guillermina R. Solis, Ph.D., an associate professor of nursing at the University of Texas-El Paso, will serve as guest speakers on “The Alzheimer’s Journey: Diagnosis to Care.”
The symposium also will feature community vendors and a local panel highlighting available resources. The event is free to attend, but seating is limited. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Those wishing to partake in a continental breakfast and lunch must RSVP by Oct. 28.
Tuesday, Nov. 11
The TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging will host a screening of the film “Remember This?” as its monthly Care Partner Academy program from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, 120 West Loop 289 Access Road. The event is free, but tickets, available through the TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging, are limited.
Tuesday, Nov. 18
The TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging will observe National Memory Screening Day with a lecture on the importance of screening by Gayle Ayers, D.O., a geriatrics psychiatrist at TTP and co-medical director of the TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging’s Memory Clinic from 3 to 4 p.m. at the TTUHSC Academic Event Center, 3601 Fourth Street. Also, memory screenings will be offered beginning at 2 p.m. Registration for this free event is encouraged.
