Texas A&M (17-8, 7-5 SEC) will host Ole Miss on Wednesday, attempting to end what has been a miserable four-game losing streak, while first-year head coach Bucky McMillan needs more from his starters, especially senior guard Jacari Lane and Rubén Dominguez, who are struggling mightily amid the four-game skid.
Another reason the Aggies have struggled to close out games is the size differential against nearly every SEC opponent, which became a guaranteed issue after Indiana transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako was lost for the season to injury after a handful of games in non-conference play.
Since the start of SEC play, Mgbako’s injury status has not been discussed, but given the time of the season with just seven regular-season games left before the SEC Tournament and the start of March Madness, McMillan’s appearance during Monday’s Aggie Basketball Hour included a discussion revolving around Mackenzie Mgbako’s current status and future with the program.
For those who also have the sports writer mentality of looking ahead, Bucky McMillan provided some insight on Mgbako’s recovery, stating that he is on track to return to the court this summer, while further noting that the former McDonald’s All-American is one of several players slated to return to the program for a final season.
“He’s doing well. He’s doing everything he’s supposed to do and should be back this summer. I hate that fans didn’t get to see how he was playing this summer. He looked like a first rounder.”

Combined with junior guard Pop Isaacs and, possibly, senior guard Zach Clemence, McMillan will be very active in the transfer portal to build the team in his image, and if Mgbako is at full strength, the Aggies will one of the most dangerous teams in the SEC, and likely have the speed, shooting efficiency, and, most importantly, the size to compete with any team in the country.
“We’ve got the opportunity to bring back guys who played keys minutes for us. Next year, we want to build around players who have been in it before.”
Texas A&M will host Ole Miss on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m which will air on the SEC Network.
