The Lady Blues officially kicked off their regular season on a long road trip out west to Lubbock for tournament play.

It was a constructive weekend for the Lady Blues as they got their first chance to analyze their strengths and weaknesses in official competition.

Head coach Adam Arrington said as much when reflecting on the tournament which took place Thursday, Feb. 12 to Saturday, Feb. 14.

“We went out to Lubbock and wanted to see some good competition and good pitching,” Arrington said. “It exposed the scenarios of where we need to get better and where we want to be.”

Arrington went on to name a few of those areas of the game he is looking to see the team work to improve, with the main one being to be more confident in the batters box. Arrington also said the team can work on the mechanics of their swings by shortening them and not dropping their barrels.

On top of this, Arrington continued to emphasize that the main message he preaches every year is to make solid contact and make routine plays defensively and if the team grows to do this more consistently they will be a tough team to face this season.

The team’s closest performance of the weekend came against Odessa High where the Lady Blues lost narrowly 3-2. Hudson Wright crushed a two run home run that also scored Ruby Shaffer, however two fielding errors lead to three runs scoring in the loss.

Arrington said that an advantage coming into the week is the team only has one game to play, so they have ample opportunity to work on their game in preparation of the upcoming season.

After a matchup this week Tuesday, Feb. 17 the Lady Blues will pick things up at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 against the  Peaster Lady Hounds at home.
