On Tuesday, Harris County Pct. 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones issued a statement mourning the death of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, calling him a transformative figure in American history.
Jackson’s passing was announced early Tuesday morning.
Briones said Jackson’s decades of advocacy helped shape a more just and equitable nation, adding that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
“Today, we mourn the loss of Reverend Jesse Jackson, a giant of the civil rights movement whose courage, faith, and leadership made our nation more just. He gave a voice to the forgotten, challenged injustice, and reminded America of its responsibility to live up to its highest ideals. His legacy lives on in every generation that continues the work of expanding opportunity, protecting dignity, and advancing equality. Rest in peace and power, Reverend Jackson. Your life changed our nation for the better, and your impact will endure for generations to come.”
Throughout his decades of activism and two presidential campaigns, Jackson became a defining figure in the fight for American civil rights, working to expand opportunities for marginalized communities nationwide.
