It’s going to be a windy day in and around Lubbock today and as we get into Spring, we can expect more of these high wind, red flag, wildfire danger type of days.

What Is A Red Flag Day?

A Red Flag Warning is issued when meteorologists forecasts low humidity, warm temperatures, and high winds. It’s very dry throughout the Lubbock area and if a fire were to start, a wildfire could rage out of control quickly.

In Lubbock on Tuesday, wind gusts could be hitting 60 mph or even stronger by this afternoon.

Things You Shouldn’t Do Outside During a Red Flag Warning Day.

When there is danger of starting a wildfire, there are some things that should completely avoid doing.

1. Don’t Throw Cigarette butts Out the Window.

Honestly, you should never do this. But we know people do. Today, please, just don’t do it. Lots of fires have started before thanks to discarded cigarettes.

2. Don’t Grill With an Open Flame

It probably won’t be a great day to grill with all of the dirt in the air, but if you were thinking about doing so, especially with an open flame, don’t. Save the grilling for this week.

3. Start Any Type of Fire For Any Reason At All

Do you feel like you just have to burn trash today? Yeah, that’s a really bad idea. Even if you live in a more rural area with fewer regulations. Just keep the trash bundled up.

4. Don’t Light Fireworks

This should be common sense, but for some reason, it’s not.

5. Don’t Mow Your Grass

A simple spark from the blade could cause a fire. And while no one is going to mow anytime soon, it’s a good thing to remember during the spring.

It pretty much comes down to common sense. If it could start a fire. Don’t do it.
