Governor Greg Abbott announced today that NRG will be building a new power plant in the Houston area. The new natural gas facility is set to generate 455 megawatts starting in 2028.

According to our TV partner Channel 2, it will be built at the site of an existing facility on Green Bayou. Abbott says it will be a roughly $617 million investment by NRG.

He praised the project, which will be built under the state’s Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program, saying: “Smart investments like these will power and sustain an even brighter future in Texas for generations to come.”
