The Houston County commission approved a traffic study for Houston Lake & Dunbar roads, backed by nearly $16 million in SPLOST funds.
HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — More than 25,000 vehicles travel Houston Lake Road every day, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation, prompting Houston County leaders to plan major upgrades for that road and nearby Dunbar Road.
“This is just a first step to engage and really to tell us what actually needs to happen for Houston Lake Road, for Dunbar Road, and the area surrounding the intersection,” Houston County Chairman Dan Perdue said.
Perdue says the commission receives dozens of complaints about Dunbar Road and Houston Lake Road, mostly about traffic.
“Certainly on Dunbar Road we’ve heard issues about it needing to be widened. Houston Lake Road it needing to be widened so we’re looking to address those,” Perdue said.
The county set aside almost $16 million from the 2024 SPLOST to address the complaints.
“This is a very growing area of Houston County here in the north end; there’s a lot of residential development that is happening,” Perdue said.
About 200 new homes are in development on Dunbar Road. Perdue says that is the growth they want to stay on top of.
The commission’s first step is a traffic study, which will cost the county over $40,000 and take about 8 weeks.
Timothy Hedden lives on Dunbar Road. He says he’s glad the county takes the proper steps for big construction projects.
“I think the awareness is important for the residents and the people traveling the road,” Hedden said.
Perdue says they hope to have the road construction completed by 2030.
