LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech University is now officially home to a second Special Olympics Unified banner, making it one of only three Texas universities to receive this recognition.
Texas Tech held a ceremony at the Student Recreation Center Tuesday evening celebrating this accomplishment.
Being a banner bearing school means there are now at least two seasons every year in which athletes with disabilities get to play a sport.
Jordon German is the sports programs manager for the Texas Tech Recreation Center.
“This banner means everything. It means Texas Tech has set the standard for unified programming across the country, Texas Tech is doing things right, Texas Tech is making sure everyone plays here,” German said.
German said not many universities have unified programming.
“Not a lot of universities have unified programming – universities that are able to pass to have the unified programming – one thing we’re actually working on with Special Olympics Texas trying to expand unified across the state of Texas. So, we can have more banner bearing schools in Texas,” he said.
The school also introduced its new ‘Team Texas’ unified basketball team Tuesday. The team is made up of local Special Olympic athletes and Texas Tech students.
‘Team Texas’ is representing the state in Minneapolis this summer in the Special Olympics U.S. Games, where more than three thousand athletes are competing.
