Texas Department of Transportation announces Big 6 lane closures for this week

  • February 18, 2026

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – TxDOT officials say more lane closures are happening this week between University Drive and Southwest Parkway heading south.

The closures started on Sunday and will continue until Thursday. On Sunday, there was a full closure of the south lanes between University Drive and Rock Prairie Road. Between Monday through Thursday, the right lane going south between University Drive and Southwest Parkway will be closed.

TxDOT Public Engagement Specialist Kendra Welch says the closures will not occur on Fridays or Saturdays due to weekend traffic.

“We’ve been having no closures on Fridays and Saturdays because we know a lot of people are out and about on the weekends,” Welch explained. “So a full lane closure, you will usually have all two lanes will be closed and a single lane its either the left lane or the right lane and then we may have some exits and entry ramps closed in between there for full closures and single closures.”

Project Engineer Blake Knox says the project is currently in phase one, step one, and there are no issues with the project.

“That phase is mainly about setting up traffic control for the bigger, widening parts of the job,” Knox said. “A lot of drainage also is in phase one, step one and that is some of the work that is continuing on in the areas around Rock Prairie.”

Welch encourages motorists to follow all the signage, especially when construction crews are working.

“Give yourself a little bit of extra time if you need to get somewhere, especially during those closure hours, but if you’re driving during the day make sure to follow those 60 mile per hour speed limit on the main lanes and then the frontage roads that have the reduced speed limits,” she commented.

The lane closures will start in the evening at 7:30 p.m. and will reopen at 6:30 a.m. TxDot plans to provide the public with construction updates on their website.
