Texas State baseball’s first loss of the season came Tuesday, as a complete pitching collapse led to a 14-4 loss to Baylor.
The Bobcats started the game with right-hander Sam Hall, who was chased after giving up two runs and recording 0 outs. Texas State initially managed to hang on for a while, even taking the lead in the third, highlighted by home runs from left fielder Jaquae Stewart and third baseman Chase Mora.
But the Bears quickly retook the lead in the fifth. The Bobcats fell apart in the following inning, as five wild pitches by the relievers eluded catcher Austin Munguia, allowing four easy runs. By the time Texas State earned the third out of the sixth, Baylor had extended to 11-4, and Texas State never recovered.

The Bobcats used 10 pitchers, allowing 17 hits, 14 runs and walking 12 batters. Freshman left-handed pitcher Titan Targac proved the most effective, holding Baylor to two hits and one run in 2 ⅓ innings pitched. Texas State first baseman Manny Salas and Rashawn Galloway both recorded two hits in four at-bats.

Right-hander Josh Glazer takes the mound for Texas State. Caraway records an infield single. Brytton Clements pinch-hits and singles to left-center. Glazer strikesout Riebok. Armstrong flies out to centerfield. Pinch-hitter Hunter Snow collects an RBI-double. Janusek flies out to send the game into the ninth.
Mora grounds out to first. Salas records a double. Park goes down on strikes. Carson strikes out and the game heads to the home-half of the eighth.

Left-hander Braylen Timmins takes the mound. He walks the lead-off batter. A high pitch bounces off Namken’s glove and Sanders advances to second. Riebock’s third hit of the day is an RBI triple. Timmins strikes out Armstrong. He hits a batter and walks another to load the bases, leading to right-handed pitcher Cameron OBanan taking over. A bases-loaded walk extends Baylor’s lead. A popout ends the inning.
Right-hander Luke DeVasher starts the seventh for Baylor. Clayton Namken pinch-hits for Munguia, and he groundsout to short. Cotton lines a single to centerfield for his first hit of the night. Galloway chops it to the shortstop, who tosses it to second to force Cotton out. Riebock picks up a grounder and throws Stewart out at first.

Right-handed pitcher Alex Yearwood takes over for Markwardt for the sixth, striking out the first batter. Riebock singles to right field. Armstrong follows with a single to center. A pitch in the dirt bounces off Munguia, allowing runners to advance. Ball four gets away from Munguia again, and a run scores.
Lefty Will Canalichio replaces Yearwood. He walks a batter. A wild pitch allows another run. Dodson flies out to center. Caleb Bergman records an RBI double. A fourth pitch bounces past Munguia and finds the backstop as the runner from third strolls home. Righty Shane Connell relieves Canalichio. Bo Caraway singles but Stewart nails the runner at third to end the inning.

Salas chops a ball toward Sanders, who fields it and slings it to first for an out. Park strikes out looking. Carson singles to right field. Boles flies out to right field, stranding him.
Armstrong groundsout to short. Targac walks Youens. Janusek lifts an RBI triple over Cotton’s head to tie the game. Left-hander Ryan Markwardt replaces Targac. Buchanan draws a walk, putting runners on the corners. Janusek sprints home on a pick-off attempt, but Salas’ throw to Munguia beats him to the plate.

Pinch-hitter Cash McDade takes a base on balls. Markwardt loads the bases with the fourth walk of the inning. A softly-hit single to center field scores two runs, but a base-running mistake allows the Bobcats to grab the third out of the inning.
Right-handed pitcher Charlie Atkinson takes the bump to start the fifth. Galloway grounds a ball to Armstrong, which awkwardly bounces off his glove, allowing the runner to take first. Stewart grounds into a 3-6-1 double play. Mora strikesout swinging.
Buchanan leads off the inning with a single. Stewart makes a play in left field on a slicing liner for the first out of the inning. Targac goes up two strikes on Sanders. He bounces the ball to Park, who flips it to Boles, who is just late on a throw to first. Sanders steals second. Targac strands the runner with his first strikeout of the day.

Carson works his way out of a two-strike hole, walking on four straight balls. Boles finds the barrel of the bat but flies out to left field. Munguia is out on an infield pop-up. Cotton strikes out on a breaking ball, sending it to the bottom of the fourth.
Texas State left-handed pitcher Titan Targac takes over for Beversdorf. Galloway nabs a flyball in right field, and Targac fields a bunt for the second out. Mora nabs a bouncer to third and throws to first, ending the inning.

Baylor right-hander Cade Waibel steps in for Zack Wallace to begin the third. Texas State catcher Austin Munguia is caught out on a fantastic stretch snag by Armstrong. Cotton works a full count and draws a walk. Galloway shoots a high fastball to right field for an RBI triple. Stewart follows up with a mammoth two-run home run to right field to tie the game. Mora pounces on another fastball for his second dinger of the season, and Waibel’s night is over.
Left-hander Mason Green steps in and promptly strikes out Salas on three straight heaters. Dodson makes a nice catch at third base for the third out.
Baylor catcher Brayden Buchanan flies out to right field. Centerfielder Bo Caraway sends it right to Boles, who forces the out at first base. Sanders records his second hit of the night with a liner to center field. Ribeock knocks another single into right field. Armstrong connects with a fastball for his 15th RBI on a single to right field. Beversdorf picks up a K to limit the damage and end the inning.

Hall walks right fielder Brady Janusek, and Hall is pulled for right-handed pitcher Alex Beversdorf.

Beversdorf strikes out third baseman Cade Dodson for the first out of the inning. The pitcher induces a 4-6-3 double-play to get out of the inning.
