A Valentine’s Day welfare check in South Austin led the Austin Police Department to discover a two people dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

APD put out a press release about the incident on Tuesday. It reveals that the department responded to a welfare check at 6715 Windrift Way after a caller reported that 39-year-old Megan Montgomery had not reported to work.

When officers arrived, they obtained a key from family members and entered the residence. Inside, they found the bodies of Montgomery and 47-year-old Samuel Rios. According to police, both had trauma to their bodies and were pronounced dead at the scene.

After conducting a preliminary investigation, homicide detectives believe that Rios fatally stabbed Montgomery before taking his own life.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact APD at 512-974-TIPs or submit an anonymous tip through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.

This is being investigated as Austin’s eighth homicide of 2026. The seventh homicide of the year occurred on Jan. 31 at 1054 Springdale Road. In that case, police responded to a call about an elderly man on the ground in front of an apartment with trauma to his head.

Police later identified the man as 65-year-old Robert Garcia, who was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. Police identified and arrested suspect, 38-year-old Raymond Ware, after a SWAT situation in a nearby apartment.

Ware declined to provide a statement to authorities and allegedly attempted to escape custody at APD’s main station. Anyone with information about that case can contact APD at 512-974-TIPS or contact the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
