The Red Youth Conference, which launched in 2024, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The event has already sold out, though organizers say they will not turn away students who show up at the door.
“We just had a heart to reach out to young people in our area beyond our church, even into other churches, providing a place for them to come and really be in the presence of the Lord and also be young,” said Christi Trahan, youth pastor at One City Church.
A defining feature of the conference is its student-led structure. Students handle worship, run the merchandise department, and produce photo and video coverage of the event.
“I think what makes us different is it’s very student led,” said Elise Ayers, a student intern at One City Church. “Whenever other students from other areas come in and see how many things that we are able to do so young, they’re able to know that they can do that as well.”
In addition to worship and main sessions with guest speakers, the conference includes 3-on-3 basketball, pickleball, and a large communal art wall. Breakout sessions tackle topics organizers say are directly relevant to young people, including one titled “Habits and Addictions: Breaking the Cycle,” another focused on post-high school planning called “This Is Just the Trailer, Not the Movie,” and a session on relationships called “Love Lines and Limits: Dating Without Regret.”
“We have so many students that are struggling with what’s my next step after high school,” Trahan said. “We wanted to find voices outside of the culture to help give some direction.”
Ayers, who speaks at the event, said her core message centers on identity and acceptance. “You can find your identity in Jesus and you don’t have to look to the things of the world,” she said. “Nobody’s ever too far gone for Jesus.”
