RUSK, Texas (KLTV) – An El Paso man convicted of brutally killing a man before setting him on fire died Sunday in a Rusk hospital while serving a 60-year sentence in an Anderson County prison.

Lorenzo Carreon, 54, of El Paso, died of cardiogenic shock, acute respiratory failure and mixed hyperlipidemia in a Rusk hospital, according to records from the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

In 2014, the man was convicted of murdering Frank Edward Jeffery, 55, after striking him with a baseball bat, stabbing the man multiple times and setting his body on fire.

Carreon left Jeffery’s body in a pool of blood on his kitchen floor for a full day before his family found the slain man and called police, according to a KVIA report.

After the murder, the man called his brother, who eventually went to the apartment to check on Carreon with their aunts, where they discovered Jeffery’s body, according to court records.

During the trial, Carreon testified that Jeffery arrived uninvited and made insulting comments about sleeping with Dominquez’s wife, escalating into a fight, according to court records.

Carreon testified he lost control and could not remember details of the assault, but remembered attempting to burn the body afterward while not in his right mind, according to court records.

While evidence presented during sentencing revealed a history of abuse, low IQ and alcoholism, Carreon was convicted of murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison.

At the time of his death, he was serving his sentence in the Jerry H. Hodge Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Rusk.
