AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin ISD parent has filed a complaint against the district claiming a male student has been using the women’s restroom.
The parent claims they notified the school of an alleged incident in January and in February, arguing that Senate Bill 8 or “the Texas Women’s Privacy Act” was violated. The law requires people in city- and state-owned facilities, public schools, universities and jails to use the bathroom that matches the biological sex on their birth certificate.Â
KVUE reached out to Austin ISD, and the district said, “We are aware of the concern and are actively working with the campus to uncover the facts of the allegation.”
The parent states they never received follow-up communication from the school on the incidents, according to the complaint.Â
The bill, which was signed into law on Dec. 4, 2025, states if someone believes the law has been violated, they must first file a complaint with the entity or school. That entity or school then has three days to respond and address the issue, and if they don’t, a complaint can be filed with the Texas Attorney General’s Office, which could launch an investigation and result in a fine. Agencies that don’t comply could face a $25,000 fine for the first violation and a $125,000 for each one after.Â
