TEMPE, Ariz. (KCBD) – Just three days after beating then-No. 1 Arizona 78-75 in overtime, the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders (19-7, 9-4 Big 12) fall to unranked Arizona State 72-67 in Tempe, ending their three-game winning streak.
With six minutes left in the game, Tech’s standout forward JT Toppin was helped off the court because of an apparent right leg injury. He did not return to the bench afterwards. While on the court, Toppin led with 20 points and eight rebounds, and was well on his way to another “double-double” performance.
The Sun Devils held a 69-59 lead with 2:18 remaining. before Tech went on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes. Anthony Johnson and Maurice Odom of ASU put the game away the final three free throws.
The Red Raiders often struggled with fouls throughout the game. Point guard Christian Anderson, who had 18 points and was 4-for-7 in three pointers, fouled out with less than two seconds remaining. Jaylen Petty was called for four fouls, Donovan Atwell and Luke Bamgboye had three.
Atwell, however, continued to stake his claim as one of the best three-point shooters in the conference. Tuesday night in Tempe, he was 4-for-8 from behind the perimeter, accounting for all 12 of his points.
Next up for the Red Raiders is Kansas State, who is coming off a 90-74 win over Baylor. This was the Wildcats first victory since firing head basketball coach Jerome Tang. Tip-off set for 1:30 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
