EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Early voting is now underway across El Paso County for the March 3 primary election, with voters able to cast their ballots at any early voting location through Feb. 27.

At several polling sites in Northeast El Paso, turnout appeared to be relatively light throughout the afternoon, though a steady flow of voters continued to come in and out despite windy conditions.

The primary election will determine which candidates from each political party advance to the November general election, it does not decide the final winners for public office.

Locally, voters will see a range of races on the ballot, including El Paso County judge, county commissioner seats, justices of the peace and several judicial positions, along with state and federal contests.

Some voters said local leadership and community issues were key factors in their decision to vote early.

“Well, but when you look at it, what’s happening now in the local government, you’ve got the city council and the county government coming together to try to decide whether or not they’re going to try to fight having new immigration detention centers brought here to this local community. So there is a place for local government to be involved in this fight,” one voter said.

Others emphasized the importance of civic participation and making their voices heard.

“To make a difference for us and our community and be strong and let our voice be heard,” another voter said.

Election officials note that turnout can vary throughout the early voting period, with participation often increasing closer to the final days and on Election Day.

Voters can cast a ballot at any early voting location in the county but must bring an acceptable form of photo ID. Early voting continues through Feb. 27, with Primary Election Day scheduled for March 3.
