A blaze at the Puerto Del Mar Apartments left multiple units damaged, displacing families like Eduardo Cantu and Samantha Navarro, who narrowly escaped with their baby.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi fire crews battled a fire at the Puerto Del Mar Apartment complex on Caravelle Tuesday night that left several units damaged.

Although firefighters were able to get the flames under control quickly and no injuries were reported, for some residents like Eduardo Cantu and Samantha Navarro, the loss is overwhelming.

The young couple say they escaped the flames thanks to their 5 month old baby.

“Well we’re glad that he woke us up in time to get us out, make sure we didn’t like get too much smoke damage in our lungs,” Navarro said. “So we’re just thankful that we got out in time.”

CCFD Assistant Chief Tony Perez said the a call came in at around 11p.m. Tuesday, but the fire crews were able to get the fire under control in 30 minutes.

“Fortunately there was no civilian injuries, no injuries to our firefighters, and these can be a challenge because it’s a big building,” he said. “It’s 16 different units, but there were four that were not occupied,” Perez said. “So out of the 16 we had 12 units that we were concerned with, four of them did have damage from the fire.”

Cantu said a firefighter escorted him up to his apartment and he was shocked by what he saw.

“They had to tear down the ceilings, spray water because the fire reached into our attic. So yeah, there’s damage everywhere,” Cantu said.

Navarro said they’re grateful their cats and dog made it out safely but they did lose their hamster.

“I was very devastated because we had so much stuff in there, so much valuable stuff in there, expensive stuff we lost, we lost so much,  just everything was gone it was just sad,” Navarro said.

Cantu said the rebuild is going to be hard, but a GoFundMe was set up by a family member to help the young couple with the process.

“Just thank you. Like it’s really gonna help us get back on our feet that it’s very much really appreciated and we can’t thank them enough,” Cantu said.
