Could Sonny Dykes be receiving another contract at TCU soon?
New athletic director Mike Buddie dropped a notable nugget in his newsletter to Horned Frogs fans titled “The Buddie System.” As he discussed updates surrounding the entirety of the athletic depart, he touched on the state of the football program.
After mentioning Dykes’ new three-hour course on Mondays at the Neeley School of Business on leadership, Buddie wrote that the school is working on an extension for him.
“We are currently in talks to extend Coach Dykes’ contract, and I will have more to share on that very soon,” he said.

Of note, Dykes’ current contract runs through 2028. TCU made him one of the Big 12’s highest-paid coaches in Dec. 2022, inking the deal amid his magical first season in Fort Worth that saw the Horned Frogs make it all the way to the national championship game.
According to USA Today’s 2025 compensation survey, Dykes was set to make $7,036,013 last season. There is a bit of murkiness on salaries for coaches of private schools like TCU, as USA Today’s amounts for private schools were based on schools’ most recently available financial records, which cover the 2023 calendar year.
Buddie also expressed excitement about the additions Dykes made to TCU’s coaching staff, including new offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis.
“I am excited about the new additions to the coaching staff — namely new offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis and head strength coach Darl Bauer — as well as in the locker room,“ he wrote. ”Sonny was laser-focused in the end-of-year review of the program and made a number of difficult decisions with the goal of bringing TCU back to the College Football Playoff.”
A contract extension for Dykes that extends beyond 2028 could give the program some helpful stability going forward as he tries to bring TCU back to the College Football Playoff.
