EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A couple was arrested Tuesday led deputies on an off-road chase in Far East El Paso after they reportedly refused to be pulled over.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, 38-year-old Edgar Esparza and 40-year-old Linda Barrientos were arrested and charged with “evading arrest or detention with a vehicle” after they allegedly drove a blue Honda Civic off the street and into the desert area when deputies tried to pull them over.
This happened at around 1:38 a.m., near the intersection of Krag Street and Montana Avenue, near the Vista Market.

The Sheriff said the deputy followed Esparza and Barrientos, driving a 4×4 patrol unit.
The Sheriff described that the chase could’ve ended when the Honda Civic became disabled while driving over the desert, but it didn’t, adding that both Esparza and Barrientos then tried to make a run for it.
Eventually, deputies found Esparza and Barrientos and both suspects were taken into custody.

Jail records show both suspects were booked into the El Paso County Downtown Jail.
According to jail records, Esparza is being held without bond, while Barrientos’ bond was set at $5,000.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Barrientos remains in jail.
The Sheriff’s office released bodycam showing the start of the chase and a moment from their arrest, where deputies– guns drawn– approach both suspects, who appear to lie motionless on the dirt by a metal fence.
