More Windy Days Ahead

  • February 19, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – This afternoon’s weather included strong winds with gusts greater than 70 mph at some locations, a critical grassland fire danger, and temperatures peaking around 20 degrees above average for the date. Unfortunately, there are more windy days in our forecast.

Decreasing Wind Tonight

Winds will decrease this evening, allowing the blowing dust to settle out of our sky. West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are possible this evening, gradually decreasing to around 10 to 15 mph, or less, after midnight.

Partly cloudy overnight with low temperatures chillier than this morning. Still, a little above average, ranging from the low 30s in the far northwestern KCBD/FOX34 viewing area to the mid-40s in the far southeastern viewing area.

Wind and Dust Return Tomorrow

Windy and dry conditions will again create a critical grassland fire danger across much of the region Wednesday afternoon and early evening. A FIRE WEATHER WARNING (AKA Red Flag Warning), issued by the National Weather Service in Lubbock, will be in effect for the far southern Texas Panhandle, South Plains, and much of the Rolling Plains from 11 AM to 7 PM Wednesday.

West winds from 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the morning will shift to southwest and increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts near 50 mph in the afternoon.

While it will be mostly sunny, the strong winds will likely result in areas of low visibility in blowing dust, mainly in the afternoon.

The afternoon won’t be as warm as Monday, but temperatures will peak roughly 10 to 12 degrees above average for mid-February.

Gusty Wednesday Night

Similar to this evening, areas of low visibility in blowing dust are possible early Wednesday evening. The wind is not anticipated to diminish as much as it is tonight. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are likely, becoming west around 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph after midnight. Mostly clear and a little colder.

No Burn Conditions Continue

Thursday brings more wind, though again not as strong as Tuesday. This will elevated the grassland fire danger and the National Weather Service office in Lubbock has already issued a Fire Weather Watch for the period 11 AM to 8 PM CST for the northern and some of the central viewing area (including Lubbock).

Thursday weather includes a mostly sunny sky – except for the potential blowing dust. West winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts near 40 mph possible. The gusty winds will begin to die down during the evening.

And Still More Wind

On This Date

On this date in 1979, very heavy snow fell across Hockley, Lubbock, Hale, and Floyd Counties. Up to 12 inches was measured in Abernathy. By late night, a man near Petersburg apparently attempted to walk from one farm house to another but was unable to make the trip and died of exposure overnight.
