Texas Tech student’s successful College Gameday kick leads to donation for Volunteer Center

  • February 19, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Volunteer Center of Lubbock has been named as the charitable recipient in connection with ESPN’s College GameDay kicking contest.

Texas Tech student John Machtolff was selected to participate in Pat McAfee’s live kicking challenge when the show was in Lubbock for Texas Tech vs BYU. After a failed first attempt, Machtolff successfully completed the kick on the second try, securing a donation for a charity in Lubbock.

Earlier this year, the Volunteer Center of Lubbock was informed that Machtolff chose the organization as the beneficiary.

“We were truly blown away by John’s decision,” Emily Smith, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center of Lubbock, said. “This generous gift will allow us to expand our ability to connect volunteers, develop leaders, and strengthen nonprofit partnerships throughout our community.”

Members of the Volunteer Center team recently met with Machtolff to personally thank him for his support.

The Volunteer Center of Lubbock serves as a hub for volunteer engagement and leadership development in the region, connecting thousands of individuals to meaningful service opportunities each year.
