Frederico Forte said, “This is a burst of color, a burst of rhythm, a burst of kindness through sound, because Carnival comes from a culture that is very inclusive for people to come together in this time of the year. Of course, it has been a global expression of our people, but in Brazil, this is the particular expression that we are sharing with Austin, and we have been sharing for many years. It takes its own flavors from the tropical rhythms from West Africa to Brazil, all of the samba schools throughout some of the bigger neighborhoods, and also the Carnival Jehova, which we call the street Carnival.

It’s very similar to some of the Blocos that we have in New Orleans. We are bringing that flavor to Austin. That’s a big part of what we dedicate as artists, dancers, and community. We have a summer school here in our city, and all year long we have different bands and different musicians that help to create a very vibrant scene of Brazilian music in a musical town. I’m here to talk about how important Carnival is for that celebration and to invite everybody to the event, and also all year long for Austin to know we have amazing Brazilian musicians in the city. We have that expression that really comes together with Austin music. So it’s not a different thing — it’s just part of that web of music that is Austin.”

{p}Anne-Charlotte Patterson said, “Austin Samba is one of the largest samba schools outside of Brazil. It's set up in a very authentic style. We have numerous drummers, different dance clubs that perform the traditional Rio style with the big feathers, and really powerful Afro dancers. We also have a very international group, including a number of Brazilians who are part of Austin Samba, and many of us have trained in Brazil. We also bring Brazilian instructors to Austin so that we are truly authentic in our dance styles and rhythms. It is a very high-energy style of music and dance.”{/p}

Forte added, “This is a dynamic event, from community organizations and community activations all the way to the different dances that you will see from a vibrant Austin Samba school, but also other drumming troupes that represent traditions like Maracatu, which is from the northeastern part of Brazil. Brazil takes different flavors, and we’re bringing a little bit of all those flavors from samba, as well as from other regional groups, including capoeira. We’re going to have some capoeira that some of you may have seen in movies or pop culture — the mix of martial arts and dancing at the same time. There are a lot of community organizations and bands in Austin that keep this tradition alive all year long. This party that we have on Saturday is such a lovely spot to have it!”
