LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The fifth annual Buffalo Grass Fest is bringing together musicians from across the South Plains to share their love of music.
Stacey Keith is the director of the Lubbock Cultural Arts Foundation. She says the annual event, which was created in 2020, is designed to connect local musicians through networking, professional development and live performance.
“Professional development for musicians, networking events for musicians, promoting great music, and really making the road easier for that up-and-coming generation,” Keith said. “Even making the doors open and the roads a little easier for established musicians.”
Student access to industry professionals
Brent Wheeler, a member of the Creative Arts department at South Plains College, said the fest gives aspiring artists the opportunity to work alongside established industry professionals.
“They get to meet somebody who’s doing it, like Shelly King or her band or the guest artist she’s bringing in and John Sprott who they get to see but have more access to in this type of situation,” Wheeler said. “So, it really helps, it gives them the idea that oh this is obtainable for me too and the things I am doing here as a student will give me the pathway to a great successful career.”
Open jam and concert scheduled
Keith said the fest offers something for attendees beyond musicians, including an open jam session where anyone can participate.

“So, there’s something kind of for everybody, you don’t have to be a musician. We always do an open jam, that’s one of the most fun pieces of this, letting everybody if they want to bring their instrument and jump up,” she said. “We have professional backline and so they got that rhythm section and they can either sing, they can play their guitar they can play any instrument they want to and that’s always a lot of fun.”
Daytime events will be held at LHUCHA from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. February 21st. A concert will follow at the Cactus Theater with doors opening at 7 p.m.
