EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — In a world that constantly demands we move faster, a new artistic exploration at the University of Texas at El Paso is asking us to intentionally slow down.
“Slow Emergences” uses dance, performance and panel discussions to rethink how we handle global emergencies.
Produced by UTEP’s Department of Theatre and Dance, the concert is urging the community to move away from rushed fixes and instead focus on long-term well-being and collective care.

“The goal of this concert is to really highlight how dance can be a method, a practice that we share with the community to tackle all those matters that ongoing speed, acceleration, global crisis, tend to destroy. So we want use dance as a way to revalue and reimagine things that really matter in our everyday life,” said Melissa Melpignano, Director of Theatre and Dance at UTEP. “So we want to use dance as a way to revalue and reimagine things that really matter in our everyday life. For instance, the healthcare system, something that I research, and I choreographed about with dancers and healthcare providers.”
UTEP dance student Crystal Najera said he enjoyed getting to work with people who are not traditional performers.
“I feel like, I mean, I think this is my fourth or fifth show here at UTEP, but I think this is the one I’ve been most excited to perform because I, again, I get to be on the stage with people who have never been on a stage in this specific setting before, so we get to see the kinds of things that like, you feel as a first performer that we often don’t feel anymore now that we’re performing as often as we do,” Najera said.
