Local television is no stranger to change. Reporters and anchors come and go. It’s just part of the business. But for viewers, it’s always tough to say goodbye to the familiar faces welcomed into their homes each evening.

That will soon be the case for those who tuned in to watch Paul Cicala on KVIA-TV. After many years in front of the camera, Paul has decided to step away from his role as evening primetime anchor.

According to local reports, his decision comes as he focuses on his health and cares for his father, who is battling dementia.

While some reports suggested he may be leaving journalism altogether, Cicala clarified in a Facebook post that he’s not ruling it out. Instead, he’s seeking a more traditional 9-to-5 schedule that will allow him to prioritize family and personal well-being.

“I appreciate everyone’s support,” he wrote. “I am not ruling out a return to TV news or journalism-related jobs, but am now concentrating on finding a career that gives me a normal schedule and a ‘9-5.’”

Paul’s Journey Through Broadcasting in Texas and New Mexico

Paul first joined KVIA in 2009 as a reporter and sports anchor. During that time, viewers connected with his infectious energy and his ability to tell stories with emotion. Paul left KVIA in 2013 and spent time working in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona as a Sports anchor.

He returned to El Paso in 2023 this time as main anchor, sharing the desk with former anchor Stephanie Valle. In April 2025, El Paso native Marcel Clarke joined him on the anchor desk.

Community Engagement: Beyond the Newsroom

Beyond the newsroom, Paul poured himself into the community. He volunteered with the Special Olympics, visited local hospitals, and gave his time wherever it was needed. If you followed Paul on social media you knew that he was an outdoor enthusiast, he often spent his free time hiking with his shelter dog, Sapita, by his side.

When I first met Paul I was always so jealous of his energy and I admired his willingness to always want to try new things.

El Paso Will Miss You, Paul

In an email to staff, KVIA management thanked Paul for his talent, dedication, and genuine love for El Paso.

Paul appears to be in great spirits and is already making the most of his time away, reconnecting with family and friends back home in Arizona. In a recent social media post, he shared a video of himself volunteering at a friend’s Indian fry bread stand, showing he’s staying active and involved in the community even off camera.

The Borderland will certainly miss seeing him on our screens. But sometimes in life we need to know when to pause, recalibrate, and choose a different path. I’m proud of Paul for being able to take that leap!

Here’s hoping his next chapter brings the balance, health, and fulfillment he deserves.
