SAN ANTONIO, Tx — The father of Jaren Lawson, the 16-year-old athlete who died after collapsing at off season football practice at Stevens High School last Wednesday is heartbroken and wants answers.
Troy Lawson says his son was not himself when he temporarily woke up in the hospital.
“It was like he was incoherent,” Lawson said. “I don’t know how long he was passed out for, but when he woke up, he wasn’t the same Jaren.”
Lawson says he didn’t question why his son collapsed until Jaren’s teammates said Jaren was encouraged to workout even though he was recovering from an illness and was struggling.
“He started getting slower and everybody was telling him to get up because the longer he stayed on the floor, they started counting down and then we have to restart up downs,” Jaren’s teammate said.
In an email from Northside ISD the denies that claim saying they spoke with every football player present stating, “Nothing in the preliminary findings aligns with the allegations being asserted.”
Lawson says Northside ISD officials have not reached out to him and that he is still seeking answers about what happened the day Jaren collapsed.
