Michigan State baseball opened the season in a massive way against No. 8 Louisville last weekend, defeating the Cardinals in two out of three games, and putting their names on the map of the college baseball world.

Now, opening this weekend of play, it is another massive test for the Spartans, who have traveled to Austin (TX) for a three-game series with the Texas Longhorns, who rank No. 3 in the nation coming into the series.

End of 7: Texas 8, Michigan State 1

Spartans can’t muster anything again, but hold the Longhorns.

End of 6: Texas 8, Michigan State 1

Another inning, the Spartans can’t get anything going offensively and the Longhorns score two more. A solo shot and an RBI single extend the Texas lead.

End of 5: Texas 6, Michigan State 1

Nick Williams draws a two out walk, but the Spartans can’t capitalize like their opponents had. Gannon Grundman came on to pitch for Michigan State in the bottom half, but he can’t put the Longhorns bats at bay, with another two run homer for Texas.

End of 4: Texas 4, Michigan State 1

Michigan State gets a single from Noah Bright but nothing more. In the bottom half, the Spartans retire the first two batters before a two out walk leads to a Texas homerun. Longhorns extend lead to three.

End of 3: Texas 2, Michigan State 1

MSU gets one back, cutting their deficit in half from a Ryan McKay RBI single, scoring Cole Van Ameyde. They put the Longhorns after a single, but nothing more.

End of 2: Texas 2, Michigan State 0

Michigan State goes three up, three down before the Longhorns get on board with an RBI single and a sac fly. Donovan then got out of the jam with a flyout.

End of 1: Michigan State 0, Texas 0

Both teams muster a base hit in the opening inning, but nothing else was going on and we head scoreless into the second.

For Michigan State, Aidan Donovan will be on the mound, while Ruger Riojas will get the nod for the Longhorns.
