The city of Bellaire and the Texas Department of Transportation are moving forward with the ongoing traffic signal improvement and timing optimization projects originally approved in March 2025, according to city officials.
About the project
The purpose of the traffic signal improvement project is to build a Traffic Management Center that the city would maintain. Typically, the centers utilize cameras or sensors to conduct real-time monitoring for situational awareness and traffic control, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
City officials said the improvement project will include the installation of closed-circuit cameras and loop detector sensors at 14 existing traffic signals.
As of Feb. 17, the city is processing a local match payment of $421,715 to TxDOT, with construction beginning once the payment is complete.
More details
Additionally, city officials said the traffic signal timing optimization project was created to improve the local management and timing optimization at 16 signal intersections.
Bellaire received permission from TxDOT in September to begin coordination, data collection, software integration and signal timing optimization, but as of Feb. 17, no construction or field work has started, and both projects are in the pre-implementation phase, officials said.
