SAN MARCOS, Texas – Brown softball (0-2) dropped its first two games of the season with losses to No. 19 Oklahoma State and Kansas City on Friday (Feb. 20).
The Bears started the day with a 14-0 loss to Oklahoma State in five innings before falling 3-1 to Kansas City in the nightcap.
Junior Maya Choksi led the way for Brown at the plate with two hits on the day. Five other Bears collected hits to start the season.
#19 Oklahoma State 14, Brown 0 (5 ininngs)
Brown had the first major scoring chance of the game in the top of the second. Maggie Foxx walked with one out and two batters later, Maya Choksi doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Lily Berlinger stepped to the plate with two outs but grounded out to third to end the inning.
Oklahoma State began the bottom of the inning with a triple and took the lead with a sacrifice fly two batters later.
A two-out grand slam by the Cowgirls in the bottom of the third pushed Oklahoma State’s lead to 5-0.
In the fourth, Oklahoma State scored two runs after beginning the inning with three-straight hits. Three batters later, a two-run home run made the score 9-0. Oklahoma State would go on to add five more runs in the inning and close the game out in the top of the fifth.
Kansas City 3, Brown 1
Three Bears collected hits as Brown dropped its final game of the day to Kansas City by a score of 3-1.
Maya Choksi picked up her first RBI of the season and Jasmine Hsiao and Elli Thompson each finished the game with a hit.
Edie Cobb (0-1) threw a complete game, allowing three runs and picking up three strikeouts.
Kansas City scored first in the second taking advantage of a walk, wild pitch and passed ball before a single made it 1-0.
The Roos added two runs in the third with a two-out single to push their lead to 3-0.
Brown’s first run of the season came in the fifth. Elli Thompson led off the inning with a double. After a pop out, Choksi singled up the middle to bring home Thompson.
The Bears weren’t able to get another run across over the last two innings, as a comeback bid fell short.
