Former Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher has been announced as special teams coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers heading into the 2026 college football season.

Maher has been coaching at Nebraska since 2024 when he joined as an assistant special teams coach.

Cowboys fans will remember Maher, who was the team’s kicker for three of his five NFL seasons.

Maher’s Cowboys tenure ended after his best season in 2022, when he made 29 of 32 field goals but came down with a case of the yips when set an NFL record by missing his first four extra point attempts in the team’s 31-14 playoff victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Jan. 16, 2023.

Maher ended his career with the NFL record for the most 60-yard field goals, a mark that would be surpassed by current Cowboys All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey.

Maher, a Nebraska native, is no stranger to the Cornhuskers and played his college football in Lincoln, where he was a two-time Big Ten kicker of the year.

The former pro kicker will try and help Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule get the formerly great program back to prominence.
