Cooler air this weekend, then temperatures take off

  • February 22, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Temperatures were slightly cooler on Saturday, thanks to a cold front that slid through earlier today.

Behind it, temperatures settled into the mid-50s this afternoon under full sunshine. North-northeastern winds around 15-20 mph with occasional higher gusts.

Hourly forecastHourly forecast(KCBD)

As we head into Saturday night, those winds ease. High pressure builds behind the front, and the pressure gradient that brought breezier winds yesterday and today relaxes.

Overnight lows will fall into the mid-20s and by Sunday morning the air will feel crisp and dry.

By the afternoon, temperatures recover into the upper 50s. Winds shift from north to south by midday as the surface high slides east and a weak trough develops in eastern New Mexico.

That southerly wind will be light to breezy, generally 10-15 mph, but it marks the beginning of our warm-up. As the southerly winds pull in milder air back into our region.

An upper-level ridge strengthens overhead by early next week. Ridges promote sinking air, and sinking air warms and dries.

Temperatures surge into the 80s Tuesday and Wednesday and afternoon winds pick up again mid-week. This raises the concern for fire danger.
