Two Richardson ISD high school students face charges this week in separate incidents, officials say.
DALLAS — Two Richardson ISD high school students face charges stemming from separate incidents Wednesday.Â
In the first incident, Lake Highlands High School and the district say a student brought a paring knife onto a school bus Wednesday morning, and another student was injured during a fight.Â
Richardson ISD said the injury “was not immediately apparent until the student arrived at school,” but emergency medical services were contacted and the injured student was taken to a local hospital for treatment.Â
Campus and school administrators reported the incident to Dallas police. Dallas police say the suspect would be released from custody and the case would be referred to a grand jury.Â
In the second incident, officials say they found a gun in a student’s backpack at Lake Highlands High School Wednesday, and the student was arrested.Â
Dallas police say they also responded to that incident and the student faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place. The suspect’s name won’t be released because of their age.Â
“We take this type of situation very seriously and are grateful that our team was able to address it quickly,” Richardson ISD said in a statement. “We highly commend the student who saw something and said something because that helped us to take immediate action. We continue to encourage all our students to say something immediately if they see or hear something that might impact the safety of any RISD school, or any student/staff member.”
Lake Highlands High School Principal Kerry Jones said in a letter to families that the school will continue to utilize security measures like portable metal detectors and offer services like counseling to students.
“Ensuring a safe school environment for students and staff is a top priority at all times. We are currently working closely with district administrators to continue to investigate both of these matters thoroughly and will take any additional necessary actions based on our findings,” the letter read.Â
