No. 24 Texas A&M (6-0) once again relied on “Olsen Magic” to get the job done and win the second weekend series of the year against Penn on Saturday afternoon. Trailing 1-0 heading into the final frame, the Aggies had not recorded a hit since the fourth inning, while a total of 17 strikeouts creates more questions than answers heading into Sunday’s series finale.

After sophomore outfielder Terrence Kiel reached second after a wild pitch, two more outs were recorded, leading to Sawyer Farr, the hero of Game 1, having another opportunity to tie the game and send the Aggies into extra innings.

During his earlier at-bats, Farr strategically waited for the right pitch to send Kiel home, taking advantage of an inside fastball that led to a double in the right corner, scoring Kiel, and tying the game 1-1. After Gavin Grahovac flew out to force extra innings. Thanks to relief pitcher Clayton Freshcorn, who retired all six batters he faced, Texas A&M earned another shot to win the game in the bottom of the eleventh.

With the bases loaded, Sawyer Farr once again stepped up to the plate with no outs, and thanks to his patience, walked in the game-winning run to keep Texas A&M undefeated heading into Tuesday night’s midweek matchup vs. Lamar.

Again, a win is a win, but 17 strikeouts are never good enough, especially for a roster talented enough to hit an Ivy League pitching staff. However, not having junior Caden Sorrell or Chris Hacopian available, even though Sorrell returned in the outfield on defense, will, and has affected the team’s offensive success.

Still, this starts and ends with head coach Michael Earely, who was reportedly irate just moments after the win, knowing that scoring three runs in two games is never good enough. Sorrell, whose glove hand was spiked during Friday’s win, is still day-to-day, and according to Earley, this is not a long-term injury issue, but fully depends on his comfort level swinging the bat.
