ATHENS, Ga. — Sophomore center Matas Vokietatitis recorded a game-high 22 points, but Texas (17-10, 8-6 SEC) dropped a 91-80 decision at Georgia (19-8, 7-7 SEC) on Saturday afternoon in Stegeman Coliseum. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Longhorns dating back to an 88-82 defeat at Auburn on Jan. 28.

Vokietaitis converted 8-of-9 field goals and grabbed five rebounds in 26 minutes. Junior Dailyn Swain registered 21 points (6-11 FG, 1-2 threes, 8-8 FT), a game-high six boards, two assists, one steal and one block in 38 minutes, while senior Jordan Pope added 17 points (5-9 FG, 3-4 threes, 4-5 FT) and three assists without a turnover in 34 minutes.

After a Swain layup trimmed the margin to 7-6 at the 16:14 mark, the Bulldogs used a 19-3 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes to build a 26-9 cushion following a Marcus Millender layup with 8:36 left. Georgia increased its lead to as much as 18 points (31-13) after a Millender three-pointer at the 6:18 mark, before the Longhorns went on a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 35-27 following a Chendall Weaver layup in transition with 3:13 remaining. The Bulldogs grabbed a 44-30 advantage after a Jake Wilkins follow dunk at the 1:15 mark, before Texas closed the half with a 5-1 spurt to trim the margin to 45-35 at the half.

The Longhorns cut the deficit to 50-41 following a Pope three-pointer at the 18:03 mark, but Georgia used an 8-3 spurt over the next three minutes to build a 58-44 cushion after a Jeremiah Wilkerson dunk with 15:21 left. Texas trimmed the lead to 60-52 following a pair of Swain free throws at the 13:29 mark.

The Bulldogs took a 67-57 lead after a Blue Cain put-back layup with 10:18 remaining, before the Longhorns went on a 10-0 run to even the score at 67-67 following a Pope three-pointer at the 7:37 mark. Georgia answered with a 10-2 spurt over the next two-plus minutes to build a 77-69 cushion after a Cain three-point play at the 5:26 mark. A Vokietaitis dunk on UT’s next possession cut the deficit to 77-71 with 4:51 left, but that was as close as the Longhorns could get for the remainder of the contest.

Texas is back on the court when it hosts No. 12/11 Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central in Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
