Family has identified the victim of a deadly break-in at a Memorial-area home early Saturday morning as Pedro Cantu, a local pastor with the Amor & Restauracion Church.

The break-in happened around 12:15 a.m. at a home on South Kirkwood Road near Carriage Hill Drive. Houston Police said Cantu called 911, reporting that he heard glass breaking and that it sounded like someone was actively breaking into the home.

“Some type of altercation ensued inside of the residence that led to gunshots,” said Detective Cater with the Houston Police Department. “There were two gunshot victims here on scene. Both were transported to area hospitals. One was pronounced deceased at the hospital and one has been charged with murder.”

Cantu’s family said he did not own a gun.

“I want people to know that my father was a peaceful man,”said his daughter, Perla Cantu, in a statement. “He did not own a firearm regardless of what you may have heard.”

Cantu had been a pastor for about 30 years. The church held a service Sunday morning honoring Cantu’s life.

Police said it wasn’t clear if the break-in was targeted or random.
