AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 3 Texas stayed hot to sweep Michigan State with a 4-0 win Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field behind the left arm of Dylan Volantis.

Volantis fueled the Longhorns’ first shutout of the season, firing nine strikeouts in seven innings while allowing five hits. He threw 91 pitches, 63 for strikes, and walked one in 27 batters faced. He has won both of his starts so far this year and hasn’t allowed an earned run.

Longhorns head coach Jim Schlossnagle said Volantis used his secondary pitches well against the Spartans, particularly his changeup.

“We were able to make some plays behind him,” Schlossnagle said. “It might have been the chilly temperatures, so it took him a little bit to find his breaking ball, but when he found it, he was going to be tough to hit.”

Aiden Robbins did something Saturday that hasn’t happened in 11 years at Texas

Volantis coaxed the Spartans into eight groundouts, and when he can mix in a changeup with his sinker, that means teams are going to beat it into the ground — if they make contact at all.

Schlossnagle said the Longhorns pitched well the entire series against a team that was “swinging with confidence” after their season-opening series win over No. 8 Louisville.

“They got some good swings on Luke (Harrison), but for the most part, I felt like we had control of all three games,” he said. “We knew the pitching staff was going to be the strong suit of our club coming into the season, given the veterans coming back and the new guys.”

Ethan Mendoza powers Texas baseball past Michigan State in series opener

Ethan Mendoza, Adrian Rodriguez and Jonah Williams all had two hits, and Williams drove in a pair of runs. One of them came the easy way with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, and then he plated Carson Tinney with a single in the third. He also hit a double for one of Texas’ two extra-base hits. Tinney had the other.
