LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock County’s new medical examiner’s office will open Thursday near the county detention center, ending years of outsourcing forensic and autopsy services to Tarrant County.
Voters approved funding for the facility in a 2023 bond election, and ground was broken in 2024. The county is contracting with UMC for forensic pathology and autopsy services.
County Judge Curtis Parrish said the facility will serve the county for decades to come.
“I am very proud of that. It’s going to be the crown jewel, not just for Lubbock and the region, but really for the entire United States. We’ve already had folks coming in from all over the United States looking at our facility saying ‘we want to mirror what you’re doing in Lubbock because you’re doing it right,’” Parrish said.
The facility also includes room to expand should the needs of the county increase or change in the future.
