When the Dallas Stars return from the Olympic break next week, they may have to do so without Mikko Rantanen.

Rantanen, who has been playing with Finland in the Winter Olympics, was hurt in the third period of Friday’s game against Canada and was ruled out for Saturday’s bronze medal game against Slovakia with a lower-body injury, according to a report from Elliotte Friedman.

This is a big development to follow as the Stars return to game action Wednesday. Not ideal. https://t.co/iOuR5ppjgF

With the Stars returning to play against the Kraken at home on Wednesday, Rantanen’s status is now in question.

Rantanen has missed just three games with the Stars this season. He served a one-game suspension issued by the NHL earlier this season because of two game misconduct penalties in the physical infractions category. He also missed two games in January with an illness.

The Stars acquired Rantanen in a blockbuster trade last March and he has quickly become a key piece of their lineup.

Through 54 games this season, Rantanen has a team-high 69 points (20 goals, 49 assists).
