No. 24 Texas A&M (7-0) remains undefeated on the season after sweeping visiting Penn, culminating in Sunday’s 7-1 victory, led by sophomore starting pitcher Aiden Sims’ career day on the mound. During his second start of the season, Sims lasted seven innings with ten strikeouts, both career highs, while allowing just three hits and one earned run during what can only be described as a masterful performance.

Entering the season, Sims was by far the biggest question mark on the pitching staff, but has performed equal to or better than fellow starters Shane Sdao and Weston Moss, and has, so far at least, answered any remaining questions regarding the Aggies’ ability to dominate on the mound.

Allowing just three runs in all three games, Texas A&M has proven its ablity to win in multiple ways, and while the offense did not impress during the first two games, scoring a total of three runs, head coach Michael Earley must have gotten through to his team, especially freshman third baseman Nico Partida, who launched his third home run of the season.

Recording a team-high three of the Aggies’ nine hits and accounting for three runs, Partida was much more aggressive at the plate, which seemed to be the trend on Sunday compared to the last two games, which certainly paid off. Following Gavin Grahovac and Jake Duer’s four-hit effort, Texas A&M’s offensive approach should be the strategy moving forward.

It’s important to note that the Aggies were without star hitters Caden Sorrell, Chris Hacopian, and Wesley Jordan, as the injury issues continue to mount early in the year. Sorrell’s hand injury is based on his ability to swing the bat, while Hacopian remains day-to-day with a back injury. Wesley Jordan was reportedly hobbled after Saturday’s extra-inning win.
