AUSTIN, Texas — The U.S. State Department is urging Americans in parts of Mexico to shelter in place as violence spreads. This comes after Mexican authorities claim Cartel kingpin, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, or El Mencho, was killed yesterday in a military operation. The White House says it provided support for the operation. It triggered hours of roadblocks with burning vehicles in Jalisco and other states. The tactics are commonly used by the cartels to block military operations.
The violence is triggering flight cancellations in Texas and across the United States. Several airlines, including Southwest and Delta say they have canceled flights and issued travel waivers to customers with flights in or out of airports in Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Governor Greg Abbott is urging Texans in Mexico to follow the guidance of U.S. officials, stay alert and to get into contact with the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate, saying situations on the ground can change quickly.
