EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Chamber is lighting the Star on the Mountain red to recognize Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 23-31.
This gesture is in solidarity with the national campaign promoting drug-free lifestyles.
Red Ribbon Week is the largest and longest-running drug prevention awareness initiative in the U.S., highlighting the dangers of drug use and the importance of making safe choices, the El Paso Chamber said.
The El Paso Chamber aims to encourage families, schools, and businesses across the Borderplex region to unite in support of a drug-free El Paso.
The Red Ribbon campaign began in honor of DEA Special Agent Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers in 1985.
Citizens in his hometown of Calexico, Calif., started wearing red ribbons to commemorate his sacrifice and raise awareness about drug prevention.
The National Family Partnership established the first official Red Ribbon Week in 1988, inspiring millions annually.
