SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Gadsden Independent School District board is set to meet tonight to address the resignation of Superintendent Travis Dempsey.
The meeting agenda includes a possible vote to accept Dempsey’s resignation, which would be effective Dec. 31., and discussion on possible action to place him on paid leave or select an interim superintendent to lead the district.

Dempsey announced his decision to retire, effective Jan. 1, 2026, in a video posted to the district’s Facebook page, where he reflecrted on his eight years as superintendent.
“The reality is, all good things come to an end. It’s hard to think about moving on. I believe I’m leaving Gadsden in a better place,” Dempsey said. “If things get tough, what I would remind everybody in Gadsden, just focus on kids. At the end of the day, things get tough. Situations happen. Problems happen. If we just spend our time focusing on students, we’ll get through it.”
Gadsden ISD has faced recent challenges such as declining enrollment and budget issues. The district also has a $75 million bond meausure on the November ballot aimed at funding school construction and facility improvement without raising property taxes, according to the district.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at the district’s administration complex in Sunland Park and will be streamed lived on the district’s YouTube channel.
