Cynthia “Cyndi” Carrick, a dyslexia interventionist at Northwest ISD’s Beck Elementary, used her reading skills to land a spot on the “Wheel of Fortune.”

During her appearance, she won thousands of dollars and a trip to the Daytona 500.

“I’ve always wanted to be on ‘Wheel of Fortune,’” she said. “I watched it with my grandmother when I was little. I watched it with my kids. And now my husband and I still watch it together.”

As a dyslexia interventionist, Carrick teaches students to recognize word patterns, suffixes and syllable types. Those same decoding strategies helped her while she appeared on the famous game show.

Carrick plans to use some of her winnings to fund themed learning spaces in classrooms.

Her advice to students?

“Don’t be afraid to chase your dreams. Put yourself out there. What’s the worst that can happen?”
