1. American, Southwest airlines cancel flights to Mexico following killing of cartel leader

Dallas-based carriers American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are warning of flight delays or cancellations because of civil unrest in Mexico. Gov. Greg Abbott has also issued a travel warning to the area.

This comes as the result of the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” who was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. 

2. Texas early voting turnout exceeds 2024 primary elections, so far

There’s one week left for early voting for the March primaries, and so far, voters seem to be flocking to the polls.

According to data from the Texas Secretary of State, in Dallas County, more than double the amount of voters have cast an early ballot in the 2026 primaries than in the 2024 primaries, which occurred during a presidential election year.

3. Texas cities dominate financial distress rankings

According to a study from WalletHub, Texas has four cities in the top 10 places in the country that have the most people experiencing financial distress.

Houston is the top Texas city, at No. 2 on the list, with Dallas, San Antonio and Austin coming in at Nos. 4, 6 and 9, respectively.

Texas nonprofit helps Afghans avoid immigration scams

A San Antonio-based organization is helping Afghans across the state avoid falling victim to immigration scams and other “unauthorized” legal practices.

Nikki Carrion, the legal services manager for Global Refuge, said many Afghans who are juggling the immigration system came to the United States after the 2021 Afghanistan evacuation.
