TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — In an update on Monday, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office identified a suspect who was shot and killed by an off-duty Austin police officer inside a barber shop near Pflugerville on Friday night.

The incident happened in the 1700 block of Crystal Bend Drive around 6 p.m. The sheriff’s office said a man armed with a gun, now identified as Jefferson Josue Rodas of Pflugerville, walked into the barber shop and opened fire at employees.

One of the shop’s employees was shot and injured, and the off-duty officer – who was a customer at the barber shop – then shot Rodas. The sheriff’s office said the injured employee was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation into the shooting is underway. The motive of the shooting is unknown.

In a media briefing on Friday, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis called the officer “a hero” who “probably saved multiple lives inside this barber shop.” The officer’s identity has not been revealed.
