A DPS trooper has been injured following a deadly shooting near a Big Spring apartment complex. A second suspect has now been taken into custody, DPS said.

BIG SPRING, Texas — A second suspect connected to an early morning officer-involved shooting in Big Spring has been taken into custody, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

According to initial reports from DPS, one suspect is dead while the other was at large, but has now been captured.

Authorities identified the suspect as David Morales, 30, of Big Spring. He was taken into custody without incident.

Morales had an outstanding arrest warrant for parole violation related to delivery of a controlled substance and burglary of a habitation, officials said. He was booked into the Howard County Jail.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a DPS officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 500 block of Westover near the Westover Hills Apartments.

The driver reportedly did not stop, and the trooper performed a PIT maneuver.

This is when deputies say the vehicle drove into the bushes, and two suspects reportedly ran on foot.

DPS said that during the foot chase, one of the suspects fired shots, hitting the trooper, and the trooper then returned fire.

The DPS Trooper sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a Lubbock area hospital, where they are listed as stable, but in an unknown condition.

DPS reports no residents at Westover Hills Apartment were injured.
