A Texas man, accused of a shooting, was found hiding in an Oklahoma home, sparking a multi-state law enforcement effort.
JOHNSTON COUNTY, Okla. — Authorities in Oklahoma say an East Texas man accused of shooting another man Sunday night in Sabine County was hiding under a mattress when he was ultimately found and arrested.
On Monday, Todd Stevens, 36, of Bronson, was found hiding underneath a bed mattress in the master bedroom at a home on the north side of Tishomingo around 7:45 p.m., according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office in Oklahoma.Â
Stevens was wanted out of Sabine County for allegedly shooting 43-year-old Cody Thompson, getting into Thompson’s truck and leaving the scene with Thompson still inside. Later on, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a vehicle fire under a river bridge near mile marker 805 on Interstate 10. Fire crews extinguished the flames and discovered burned human remains inside.
In a statement from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office in Oklahoma, they say investigative efforts led law enforcement to believe Stevens was fleeing the area with possible help from a family member. They determined he was possibly heading toward Oklahoma, specifically the Johnston County area.
Just after 5 p.m., the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office asked for help to find and arrest Stevens. Â At first, they went to a home in Wapanucka, Oklahoma, where he was believed to be located, but a search was not successful. They then gained information to search a home in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, the JCSO said.
JCSO deputies also learned a possible co-conspirator, who had been arrested in Sherman, Texas, admitted to dropping Stevens off at the home on the north side of Tishomingo. Once at the home, five people exited, following the orders of law enforcement, the sheriff’s office said.
Stevens was found hiding underneath a bed mattress in the master bedroom. The deputies interviewed and took statements from the other people, who were then released, officials said.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said Stevens will be taken back to Sabine County and he is expected to face criminal charges.
“We are extremely proud of the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, including our fellow Sheriff’s Offices in Texas,” Johnston County Sheriff Gary W. Dodd said. “The communication between all agencies brought a swift end to this suspects run. Also, allowing us to remove him from our community, protecting the Citizens of Johnston County and Oklahoma.”
